Richard Rubino reported the following for Del Stone:
"Del Stone, who last year wrote a well-researched article about monarchs for the Northwest Florida Daily News, emailed me a couple of days ago saying, 'I have seen hundreds of monarch butterflies locally (Fort Walton Beach) in December and January, more than I have ever seen.' He reemphasized this in a second email saying that he has, 'seen a steady stream since November, probably saw more in December than I saw in September and October. But I'm still seeing them--just this afternoon I saw several.'
"Del added, 'On slow days I have seen one or two; on busy days I have seen as many as 15 or 20. Collectively I would describe them as more plentiful than I've seen in many years, and much later in the season than the fall migration. I would guess these are indigenous monarchs, not transients, but I have no data to prove that.'"
