Sightings report image

Date: 03/13/2016

Number: 1

We sit on about 10 acres with between 100-200,000 antelope milkweed plants ( see my attached 2015 picture).
Monarchs usually reach us in Early April or maybe the last few days in March. I will go out today and see if I can find newly emerging milkweed, if so I will get a picture and send it your way. :)

In 1990 we have video of our mesquite trees covered in monarchs as they moved south in November, it was amazing! That time of year we have huge patches of Golden Rod.

There are local monarchs that never go northward from our location. They breed and stay here. It makes you wonder how that happens until you consider that 12,000 years ago glaciers covered much of the midwest. Obviously no monarchs could go north of Texas unless they wanted to freeze. During that time they may have migrated to central Texas and stopped. This likely encoded many to come this far and stop. Hence it is not surprising there still are monarchs coded to stop in Texas and not go north. More time needs to be spent checking the genetics and life history of these local Texas monarchs.
