It was 6pm and I went down into the pastures to look for milkweed. To my amazement a monarch flew out of our woods and began to nectar on false garlic flowers (Nothoscordum bivalve). I went closer to within 2 feet and could see she was a faded female monarch of medium-size. She had slightly tattered wing edges and a small hole in one wing. But she was overall healthy with good flying ability -- she flew two tight circles around me, then went back to nectaring. I went to get my camera, but alas she was nowhere to be seen when I got back. I think she returned to the woods for the evening. It was windy and warm -- about 75 degrees F. I did find some milkweed as well, but she was the real joy: clearly a long distance traveler who I felt so happy to see.
