Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 03/19/2016

Number: 1

This is a newly emerged monarch on the house wall.We have had monarchs sighted regularly over the winter except for very cold days in January. We have seen monarchs daily during the last few weeks. We have about 12 milkweed plants in pots and in the garden. About 50 monarch larvae stripped them in late November. They were just recovering leaves in the last month when new adults appeared laying eggs. During the first 2 weeks of March many larvae have now stripped the leaves again and we are seeing adults trying to lay eggs on the few leaves left. We cannot keep enough milkweeds with healthy leaves for this large and persistent monarch population here in South Texas. There are larvae and pupae everywhere. These cannot be adults migrating from Mexico yet.
