Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 03/27/2016

Number: 16

Saw 16 adults, generally heading north when not in woods. This was during a 1 hour walk (about 2 miles). Also found eggs on our wild zizote in the pasture.

Barbara and I have raised monarchs for several years. We know what they look like and can recognize their distinct flight pattern. Our passion vine supports Gulf frits, so we know what they look like. Viceroys do not fly the same way, and most of the monarchs we saw on our walk were clearly flying north. Queens in our area are much smaller and are easily distinguished when flying. It was a pretty usual sighting, hence our posting on DPLEX as well. We have found numerous eggs on our zizotes and giant milkweed, something we have not seen in the past 3 years. The report spanned a 2 mile walk (about a hour), so they were not all crammed together in our garden (I wish!).
