Sightings report image

Date: 03/25/2016

Number: 6

Today was a special day as I saw at least 6 egg-laying monarchs. I walked in our pastures following them quietly, trying to get near to get a photo without disturbing them ~ sometimes they fluttered past me so closely I heard the whisper of their wings. They were all intent on finding milkweed and seemed to know where milkweed was in past years. In some cases searching fruitlessly, because the milkweed has not emerged yet this year in all the usual spots. The day was peaceful and lovely, with only the shimmer of a breeze, full sun and blue skies, about 68 degrees F. I saw these 6 monarchs over the course of an hour between 12:30 and 1:30pm. They flew widely over the pastures at times and at times focused on milkweed patches ~ then traveled on into woods or wilder areas nearby. The photo is of one of the beautiful monarchs laying her egg on a milkweed plant.
