Hummingbird, Other Species Sighted

Date: 04/04/2016

Number: 2

I saw the Hummingbird I had seen the day before at Kitchen window feeder. He fed at 12:30pm, 1:30pm & 3 pm. At 5 pm I went outside to water flowers near the kitchen feeders & heard the distinct "Whirling Sound of the Black-Chin Wings". He must have been behind me trying to get to the kitchen feeder which I was blocking. As soon as I went back inside he fed at the feeder. At 5:30 pm I went to patio area to watch their favorite feeder. I could see movement in the trees & could see him perching on the vines, often changing positions or flying outward, hovering in mid-air and going back to a sitting area. It appeared that he was catching insects maybe perhaps gnats & mosquito's. Every time he moved I could hear the "Whirling Sound" of his wings. My husband was watching with me (for a little while) & he said he thought he saw a flash of red one time when he was feeding. We were still thinking at this point we had only one Hummer. At that time I was not sure if my husband really did see a flash of red because I had not seen it yet. I walked out to the edge of the yard & saw a Hummer move further back from me (also heard the "Whirling Sound of the Black-Chin Wings") & then I was seeing #2 another Hummer to the right of him about 5-6 Feet away. I noticed when the 2nd one moved his wings did not have the "Whirling Sound that the Black-Chins do. So now I knew there were 2 Hummers. They both were changing sitting positions as I moved. But both seemed to want to stay in the vines near this feeder. I went back to my chair to watch. A fairly large size Hummingbird (#1) came to the feeder & I did see a flash of purple near his throat area. Then later the smaller one came to the feeder but the Black-Chin chased him away. I was thinking the smaller one may indeed be a Ruby-Throat that my husband saw earlier with the Flash of red near his throat. One time the Black-Chin chased the smaller one all across our backyard area & that was the only time I heard Vocal chirps(that reminded me of the Vocals of our Ruby-Throats) in North Carolina. I had to go inside before it got dusk so I never got to see any activity after that. Hope they come back tomorrow. I was pretty sure at least 1 of them if not both found a sleeping place in all the thick cover with the vines.
