Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/18/2016

Number: 1

First sighting of the season. Adult (sex undetermined since it flew right by us in a hurry headed Northwest.

I am 100% positive in my ID that it was a Monarch. I am new to this area of NC but when I was living in NJ I raised thousands from egg to butterfly and have worked in a butterfly conservatory for years. I was surprised too. But another friend who visited the Monarch overwintering sites with me several years back and is a life long Monarch enthusiast confirmed to me he has spotted several Monarchs as well several miles from my NC sighting. I will check for milkweed growth, etc...and make further reports.
The monarch flew within a few feet directly overhead so I am confident in my ID but will keep reporting and looking for milkweed in my new home state. I will try to get a picture of the next one 😉
