Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/15/2016

Number: 1

Didn't get a photo but it was definitely a ruby. We have been getting them here on the west coast for decades especially in the peace river district. Because it's so mild on the west coast I have been noticing them more and more in the city.
It was not a rufous as the rufous is brown and not a bright green with the flaming red.
I had one at my feeder and one at a friends feeder quite a few blocks away from me so I wasn't sure if it was the same male or not. He was zipping around so quickly I did not get a picture, but this is the second year I have seen him so hopefully he will be back. But please make note that we do get them here on the west coast. There's many differences between an Anna's and a Ruby... Rubies sound like jets and are much bigger, also the white under their chin is more pronounced. The Anna's is so aggresive, when the Ruby comes to the feeder the Anna chases it away.
The Calliope has the tell-tale feathered fans coming from it, like an old thunderbird and I have never seen any black-chinned. I am 100% confident it’s a Ruby.
