Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 04/24/2016

Number: 1

Hard to believe that we are still seeing 22 cats, hatched 12 days ago, all fat and very active- almost ready to go into chrysalis. We finally have enough leafy plants, so they don't have to travel far to a fresh plant. We grow the tropical milkweed, and white swamp milkweed, and they like them both. It seems to have helped that we cut down all stalks as soon as vacated, so all growth is new, and apparently virus-free. One of the "sisters" from earlier this spring was in the yard today, laying more eggs. Hope the plants will have time to recover for the next round. I've been taking cuttings as I trim. We've been moving chrysalids to the mesh enclosure as we find them, and have had 100% survival of butterflies coming out. Before we did that, we were losing half to lizards, birds, and wasps. We just doubled the size of our flower garden, and the butterflies and hummingbirds seem to like that!
