Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/27/2016

Number: 1

I just saw one adult fluttering in the yard. I wasn't able to get close enough to see if it was male or female. the colors were pretty faded. It was staying close to the ground and out of the wind too. It went around the side of a building and I lost sight of it. There were storms yesterday, so there's plenty of water here. There are some wild phlox and wild cherry blooming along with dandelions and iris. This was definitely a Monarch. I have seen viceroys too, but they are so much smaller than Monarchs. I was able to follow the butterfly for a while, trying to see if it was male or female, so there's no mistaking that it was in fact a Monarch. It kind of had me surprised too. I have also seen wild milkweed coming up--about 2-3" out of the ground.
