Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/03/2016

Number: 1

First Monarch of the year lazily flying around the crown of our River Birch tree. It appeared to be methodically looking for flowers, but the tree is well past peak blooming time, and it never did land to nectar. I went inside for my camera but it was gone by the time I got back. I have zero doubt it was a Monarch. It was very slowly gliding around a tree in my front yard, and the looks were very good. I have been interested in butterflies many years and am very familiar with all the other possibilities. I have conducted butterfly surveys professionally for Iowa DNR and am on our state wildlife action plan butterfly subcommittee.
