Bob and Gail reported five monarchs spending the winter at Rio Salado Habitat Restoration area near Central and the Salt River in Phoenix AZ. This is an annual event at this location. The monarchs are all male this year and for the first time are appearing like they are in breeding mode, setting up territories and waiting in the milkweed patches for a female. Earlier they were present on warm sunny days and fed on seep willow. No evidence of any egg laying on the extensive A. subulata in the habitat all winter.
