Monarchs migrating along the Trinity River in northern California

There are not many places in the western US where you can regularly see Monarchs migrating northward in May.

One such place is along the Trinity River in the Trinity National Forest in northern California. Since 2012 I have visited this location each Memorial Day weekend and have seen Monarchs migrating northward along the river.

During 2012-2014 only 20-30 were seen in each year over a two day period. In 2015, I observed around 100 during two days and tagged 19.

One of these was subsequently, recovered in late June 439 miles ENE in Twin Falls, Idaho.

This past Memorial Day weekend, I again observed an estimated 110 mostly fresh condition, fat-bodied males migrating north along the Trinity River Valley. I tagged 30 of these and hopefully one or two of these will be found over the next month or so.
