Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 05/30/2016

Number: 1

Despite all the storms, we continue to see occasional Gen1 monarchs just north of San Antonio.
The greatest number are seen in Guadalupe River State Park.
I've been scouting the County and FM ROW's for milkweed, primarily A. Asperula. This year has been the most prolific year for milkweed in the 15 years I have lived in the Texas Hill Country. The A. asperula bloomed early. Many seed pods have developed and have been brown for 2-3 weeks. With all the overcast days and rain, the pods have not matured. Some of the pods are starting to rot, some are covered with oleander aphids. Large milkweed bugs are very abundant!
Despite all the milkweed available, we may have a poor harvest of milkweed seeds. In 2015, I was only able to harvest a few pods because of similar conditions.
