Horticulture staff member Darl Fletcher reported to me that he and his staff saw a crisp and fresh monarch butterfly on and around a blooming common milkweed patch near one of the picnic areas at the Virginia Living Museum, AKA Monarch Waystation #299. They could not confirm the gender, but the butterfly they saw behaved like a male, alternately nectaring and "patrolling" the milkweeds and other nectar sources. There was no obvious egg-laying behavior. They said one monarch was repeatedly seen for several days in these same areas and then disappeared.
