Super excited (hence the length of this post. I have lived at this location almost 20 years and this is my first ever spring sighting of a ruby-throated. It was about 9:30am. I think it was a juvenile (it looked all brown) or maybe a female. It looked to be heading toward my new Hibiscus tree when I spotted it. It seemed to not even care about the feeder a couple feet away.
Unfortunately I was doing some gardening and didn't know it was around and when I stood up I startled it and it flew off. Hopefully he/she comes back or others come.
This comes on the heals of my first ever visitors last fall when they came to my new Lantana tree I got in August. I had a feeder out for 3 or 4 years prior and no sightings until the Lantana came along. The Lantana still isn't in bloom which is why I purchased the Hibiscus and I purchased the Hibiscus in hopes of catching them again when they head south (along with the Lantana). I did everything this year to try and get the spring arrivals (added a second feeder, new plants in the garden, etc.) but nothing. This arrival was a total surprise (never having had one before in spring and it being so late for a first sighting).
