Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 06/09/2016

Number: 1

First confirmed adult sighting last week in early June (~6/9). Although one month ago, there was a brief sighting with less certainty.

It is an adult nectaring on exotic butterfly bush and jessamine (Southeastern US native), rather than plentiful CA natives in bloom (three sp. mallow, verbena, Santa Cruz Island buckwheat, deerweed, gillia cap. and common lippia). May not yet have discovered very small milkweed plants not in flower (A. fascularis and speciosa). Milkweed is not growing under ideal conditions. Due to poor drainage, some plants are in containers.

This is the 'First Adult' monarch sighted here in two years.

Butterfly cohort include California Sister, Giant Swallowtail, Gulf Frittary, unknown Sulfur and many metalmarks.
