Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/11/2016

Number: 1

Hundreds of milkweed plants waiting and only one monarch this whole summer. I hope it was a female. I will keep checking for eggs on the plants in the field next to my property. By this time last year, I had already seen hundreds of monarchs and was taking care of many caterpillars. Very sad not to see more. I believe the spring storm in Mexico is to blame as well as the Mexican government for not protecting the Oyamel forest. We can plant all the milkweed we want here in the U.S., but if the monarchs wintering ground isn't preserved, it will all be in vain. If the Oyamel forest was here in the U.S., it would already have been designated a national treasure.
