Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 07/12/2016

Number: 2

I was doing MLMP monitoring at the Lourdes University waystation, when a female monarch arrived and began laying eggs in the garden. She was laying eggs on the swamp milkweed BUDS! I watched her lay 4 eggs, and then a University professor joined me to watch her briefly. We then went over to view the new nearby prairie installation, and when I returned to the waystation 20 minutes later the female was gone. But a male was now patrolling the garden. He perched on a willow branch, and I was able to slowly sneak up on him and catch him by hand. He was fresh, no wing wear, just a few scratches on the dorsal surface of his wings. Bright, nothing torn. Amazing! I released him with the university professor and 2 students, we watched him fly into a nearby cottonwood tree.
