Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 07/12/2016

Number: 2

2 newly emerged male monarchs were seen nectaring on Cup Plant in the butterfly garden behind the main building about 8:20 am. These are the first monarch adults I have seen personally, but other coworkers have seen them before. Later in the day I saw one male outside the Cafe entrance nectaring on purple coneflower. Another coworker saw a monarch nectaring on the Rudbeckia near the staff/Ed Center gate. Not sure if all these sightings were of the same two males or not. An informal search of milkweeds nearby these areas didn't turn up any eggs, caterpillars or feeding damage. All common milkweed on the grounds are in the maturing seed pod stage. Some butterflyweed is blooming on and off and tropical milkweed is in bloom in the Children's Learning Garden
