Today, a fresh female arrived in my yard and began laying eggs all over my garden. She nectared on my swamp milkweed, but did not lay eggs on it. She also ignored my butterflyweed and Sullivant's milkweed. But she laid over a dozen eggs on my common milkweed, and she laid her eggs on both the flower buds and the leaves! It is always fun to watch individual monarchs choose milkweed plants to lay their eggs on, and see where on the plant they choose to lay their eggs. Some females lay eggs only on the buds, some lay eggs only on the leaves, others like to do both. Some even lay eggs on the pods or plant stems. Some monarchs prefer swamp milkweed, while others prefer common milkweed. That is why I always like to plant more than one milkweed species in any garden I create.
