Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)
Sightings report image

Date: 07/16/2016

Number: 3

I have been looking for any signs of monarchs on my swamp and common milkweed plants for several weeks, with no luck.

On 7/16 my husband and I drove south of our home in Arcade,NY (Latitude 42.5) for over an hour to reach Allegany State Park to canoe and look for monarchs.

We visited the designated Butterfly Meadow where a large patch of common milkweed grows along with golden rod and other wildflowers. Right away I saw three monarchs. It was around 3PM and it was near 80 degrees F. One of the monarchs I was able ID as a male.

I watched quite a bit of territorial battle between the three monarchs and the several fritillary butterflies nectaring on the blooming milkweed flowers, which were at peak!
