Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/17/2016

Number: 1

WhooHoo!!!! One male on echinacea (coneflower), salvia, verbena, black eyed susan, and other flowers. I have over 60 milkweed plants, swamp (white and pink), common, tropical, hairy balls milkweed and butterfly weed. Only the tropical milkweed and butterfly weed are currently blooming. This male is wild born. He is fresh and new looking.

Two of the neighbors have put in wildflower fields in lieu of grass this year--I still just have 6 large flower beds (about 400 sq feet of flowers). I am trying to mainly grow butterfly, hummingbird and songbird attracting flowers. Each year I add more...may try to add a wildflower bed now.

Praying now for a female monarch...

Last year I had no monarchs at all until the migration began.
This is also the first monarch I have sighted anywhere in the area this year.

I have just ordered about 60 caterpillars from Monarch Watch to be delivered about the first of Sept. as my first try at raising monarchs for release. I am ordering more milkweed plants to feed them. I just wish I could do more to help the migration and population.
