Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/27/2016

Number: 2

Spotted 2 5th-Instar Monarch caterpillars about 100 feet off of Lake Michigan at the Pier Cove Public Beach. Small patch of about 30-50 common milkweed plants, plenty of food available for them and almost no chance of clear cutting as half of the patch is on private beach-front property and is allowed to stay. Low 80 degrees, low humidity, partly cloudy skies. I debated taking them inside to finish their larval life-cycle, but ultimately chose to let them stay outdoors and make it on their own. I hope they make it to become healthy adult butterflies!
