Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 07/30/2016

Number: 1

First Monarch larva of the year was observed in Amherst, New York on a Swamp Milkweed plant. The larva was an estimated 3/8 inch in length.
I'm very concerned about adult Monarch butterfly abundance this year in Western New York. Numbers seem to be exceptionally low based on my observations. Also, I recently took a vacation to the French River area of Ontario and observed no Monarch butterflies during an approximately one-week stay there. Can you shed any light on the bigger geographic picture regarding adult Monarch butterfly observations this summer in the northeastern US and southern Ontario?
