I discovered 3 monarch larvae on one milkweed plant growing under my deck. All three are in final caterpillar stages, and feeding on leaves. However, I will not bring them indoors for rearing because two of them are very dark-colored and may be infected with a disease. I researched monarch diseases and discovered that NPV, a highly contagious and fatal virus, can cause caterpillars to turn black. I'd like to hear from others who have experienced this.
