Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 08/13/2016

Number: 35

I took some time to look through my milkweed patch (Monarch Waystation #11878) and found a total of 35 caterpillars. Like last year, they seem to really concentrate on the Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata). I found up to 5 caterpillars per plant on those and two completely defoliated plants, while there were usually only one or two per plant on the Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and still plenty of leaves left. Just one caterpillar was munching on the Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa).
