Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 08/15/2016

Number: 1

The last time we had seen Monarch eggs and caterpillars around here was on 7/28/2016. It has appeared since then that breeding Monarch butterflies had moved on from our area. However, I spotted a 30 mm caterpillar on a common milkweed along Spring Creek at Fisherman's Paradise (near Bellefonte, PA) this past Monday afternoon (8/15/2016). We brought it home, and today (8/17), at about 50 mm, it is still happily chomping away on (and pooping from) a potted swamp milkweed in my dining room. These little fellas are certainly "eating machines."
