3-4 (or more) hummingbirds at every feeder in the habitat--there are presently 16 feeders. These hummers appear to be the families that we've hosted this summer--they are fearless, friendly, playful, and enjoying hummingbird games as they eat and prepare for the long journey south. In addition to feeders, tall branches are attached to the Shepard hooks, some are 12 feet or higher this year--which provides delightful "look out" landing pads--and there are usually several hummingbirds, resting, preening, scanning the sky, getting reading to defend, or join in a game of tag in these tall, slim, branches. There are trees and shrubs planted near the Shepard hooks, so the area is filled with hummingbird hyjinks, aerial feats and mischief. Flower families are planted in masses; making it easy to find "A LOT" of a preferred nectar source in one spot :-) Favorite flowers: Proven Winners Cuphea "Vermillionaire" and Black and Blue Salvia, Dicentra Scandens Anthens Yellow, Major Wheeler Honeysuckle, Ansarnia Red Wine, Garden Phlox, Lantana and Hibiscus. A little female often sits under the Hisbiscus leaves and next to a big bud--she likes to poke, and prod the buds--perhaps she's encouraging them to open. Late summer is a delightful time to observe their activities and antics.
