Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/22/2016

Number: 1

From April 1 to late July, my two feeders were busy with male and female calliope and rufous birds. There has not been one bird at my feeders in August.

I live in a mountain valley region with dry, hot summer weather, and with an active government-controlled insect sterilization program for the many orchards nearby. My best guess for the absence of hummingbirds in August is that a) the hot weather induces a migration within the zone to cooler higher altitudes and b) these same mountain regions may have less impact on insects, allowing the birds easier access to food.

Combine this with the southern migration signal in late summer in BCmay explain the absence of hummingbirds here in August.
