Sightings report image

Was out gathering milkweed leaves on a farm and monarchs were everywhere! They were eating so intently that I could have picked them off the milkweed flowers while they were nectaring! It was wonderful to see so many at one time. They looked great.

The farm is large and divided into four sections. There is milkweed everywhere, in all four sections. You can imagine the beauty of driving around (we drive the property, we'd never make it walking in this heat) and seeing them. Simply awesome.  These are three patches of likely over 20 in just one of the four sections of farm. In the picture you can see a monarch flying to the right of the patch. If they are laying I spook them.  It was really hot out, my husband was trying to get a photo of me in my element! I look like I'm dying.

Today (August 30), while out driving to schools I saw several migrating monarchs. One right over I-71! My friend, a forester with the KY Division of Forestry, was out walking a logging job today and sent me text that said 'the monarchs are really moving today!'

Though it was slow in starting the season, the monarchs definitely made up for their absence. Most we've seen on this property in YEARS!
