Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 08/28/2016

Number: 2

Monarch Waystation #271 report: At 11:03 am, I looked out my 2nd story window down onto my front yard to see a Ruby-throat nectaring on Tithonia. A second hummingbird appeared and both began a short aerial dog fight, with one bird trying to chase the other from the Tithonia plant while both attempted to nectar. There were too many blooms on the one plant for the defender to be successful, and there was another Tithonia on the other side of the yard. The encounter ended with one chasing the other up over the house to the back yard. My next door neighbor to the East maintains 1-2 hummingbird feeders, so 1-2 birds all summer have been doing regular "laps" between our yards. Gender not obvious because of my vantage point, but haven't seen any obvious males in a month.
