Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/02/2016

Number: 2

They are feeding really early. From 6:30-7:25am(cst)The 1st Hummer to feed was the large Adult female Black-Chinned taking a long drink when she left the Adult Male B.C. came & did same behavior. They came about 2 more times before leaving to feed somewhere else. The Adult Male Ruby we had this Summer has not been seen since around 08/21st. At 12 noon today we were amused to see the male Juvenile perching high on top of a bamboo stalk we were using to stake up our Mexican Sunflowers. Several branches were left at the top for their perch sites. He sure was using it today as he was trying his best to keep all the other Juveniles away from the Mexican Sunflowers, Turks Cap & Hamelia Patens. Between 5-6:30 pm they were all active again. I also noticed a new visitor- an Adult Male Ruby. He is smaller than the other one we had. He also did not like the same feeder the Summer one did. He is very shy & hesitate to drink from feeders & does not like to come closer than 8-10 ft. from humans. He also loves the Cuphea x 'David Verity'. Juveniles were in "rare form". At least 4-5 of them. They paired up in 2-3 chasing all over & thru yard like a race-track very low to the ground at times of only 2-2 1/2 ft. They really were all over the place. One Juvenile was sitting on the feeder eating when another Juvenile came in hovering behind him as if to say "Get off of the feeder now!". The one feeding decided he was not going to cooperate so the hovering one said by his actions "Oh yes you will even if I have to make you!". He then took both feet & grabbed the back of the one sitting while his wings were going the whole time. He then pulled the other one off the feeder & they went backwards in a "Tumble" Oh my! They are learning to be aggressive. My husband said they are having to get their training & all of their work-outs in for the big flight! I enjoyed watching their antics. I put 2 as the number of males but we had a total of 7.
