Monarch Adult Sighted

Number: 1

One female sighted nectaring on my verbena bonareinsis (aka purpletop vervain, clustertop vervain, Argentinian vervain , tall verbena, or pretty verbena) plants.
These v. bonareinsis plants are the most popular nectar sources in my gardens for ALL the butterfly species that visit. I only rarely see these plants without butterflies during the daylight hours. They have a long bloom period--some began blooming in late May and they are still going strong.

The plants are somewhat tender--in my zone 7 gardens the verbena bonareinsis sometimes overwinter but sometimes they don't make it when it is very cold. Luckily, they self seed readily so they replace themselves.

Be careful that it does not escape your garden. It has become invasive in Washington State.
