Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/04/2016

Number: 1

This Adult Ruby-Throated Male has graced us with his presence for several days. He is a visitor & is not the male Ruby that was with us all season. I do not think we have seen that Huge, fat male Ruby for several days , maybe even a week ago. Our adult Black-Chinned male's last day with us was 09/02. He had fatten up really well before he left & was a very beautiful Hummingbird. While I miss our regular males I am happy to have this one-lone male as long as he wants to stay. I do hope he stays a little while longer. He is very shy. When he first got here he only hovered at the feeder's & fed heavily on the Cuphea (Cigar) plants & Salvia Black & Blue. He also feeds on Salvia Amistad. Now he has learned to sit at the feeder's & he is feeding a lot on the sugar water. He is getting larger each day & gaining a lot of belly-fat. He does think that he owns the whole backyard. So, since he has taken over the 3 feeder's we already had up & chasing all of the females & Juveniles- I have added 2 more feeder's so everyone can eat in peace. We do take the 2 extra feeder's down early in the am & between 5-6 pm just so we can get a "head-count" & see if he is still with us. He is guarding the 3 feeder's while he is perched high in a large Oak tree so he can keep a "look-out" on everything going on in our backyard. He is quick to defend his "food territory". He delights us with a lot of vocals & zooming past us & around us like a "speedy-Gonzales". It is difficult to get a picture of him as he is so very fast & does not sit at the feeder long except in the evenings when the light is low. I was a little surprised to get another "new to me" Ruby but so glad he is with us. We had a female Black-Chinned today along with several Juveniles Rubies & Black-Chinned ones. We maybe even had a female Ruby. They are all so very difficult to tell apart. Tonight we counted 6-8 hummers. It was partly sunny with temps. around 99 degrees in the shade & 111 Degrees in the sun. But that is due to our concrete around our pool heating up. I hope he is still here tomorrow.
