Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)

Date: 09/05/2016

Number: 1

5-6:30 pm seems to be the best time for our "Hummingbird Show" & I wanted to share it with my husband. I know that any day our "Visiting Adult Male Ruby" could leave & we may not get another one coming thru this season. He put on quite a "Show" for us again tonight. I now have 5 feeder's placed out in our modest backyard & he still tries to control every inch of it. The Juveniles have to feed on the plants at the very edge of the backyard in the far corner. They do sneak in to the feeder's when Ruby is not looking esp. when the sunlight fades. The tall Mexican Sunflowers help to block some of his view of them feeding in the back & I hung an extra feeder for them under a tree back there. The Cigar plants & Black & Blue in pots near patio feeder's also help block his view. The Adult Male Ruby sits high in a Mature Live Oak tree with a lot of snags at the top which gives him the advantage of controlling 3 of the feeder's. I really do not know how he gains any weight with all of that flying around & chasing all of the Juveniles/Females. But, if anything the young ones are learning speed & maneuvering skills for their flight to their wintering grounds. I put down the # of birds as 1 because it was under Adult males & I did not want it to count as 6-8 Adult males but we had a total of the 6-8 hummers counting this male, female B.C. & female R.T & Juveniles. Difficult to get total when they are all going in all directions at same time with plants blocking our view of some of them. I am planning to put a feeder on front porch tonight. Ruby has been with us about 5-6 days. Temps. have been in high 90's this wk. Slight breeze today swaying our saucer feeder's a little. I hope this does not mean Ruby is getting ready to leave us to catch a "Tail-wind" to push him on towards Mexico from our North Texas home near Dallas. Because I will miss his vocals & lively excitement he brought us. Reminds us of the Rubies we had in N.C. Fun to watch.
