Our population is starting to dwindle. The remaining boys left Wednesday, September 1st. Our remaining hummers are primarily females and juvies who lived here this summer; and a few migrators who are visiting the east habitat--where big, tall, 6 foot tomato stakes have red flags flying--in Black and Blue Salvia plant pots, on the hill. (To encourage migrators to stop, refuel, and rest). Thursday September 1st was one of the biggest "nectar feeding" days we've had, in the history of the habitat--more than 40 hummers and the consumption of almost 3 gallons of nectar throughout the day. Favorite flowers: Vermillionaire, Black and Blue Salvia, Cleone, Lantana, native Jewleweed, Hibiscus, Purple Prince Zinnia. Two of our female hummer friends performed "The Window Dance" before departing this week. Days are becoming shorter--feeding starting at the feeders a little before 7AM and ending around 8PM. Overcast skies, rain predicted. 1 PM temperatures approx 73 degrees. Habitat is presently filled with a lot of hummingbird play with groups of 2 or 3 flying together as they chatter.
