Females and juvies continue to enjoy late summer in the forest, sunny today temperatures ranging from 52 to 73 degrees; lots of activity throughout the habitat with friendly play, chatter and companionship among our tiny guests. Favorite perches usually have the same occupants and they are using the flowers--Vermillionaire, Black and Blue Salvia, Cleone almost as much as the nectar feeders. I had the thrill of finding my first humming bird nest. Carefully built on top of a nest that our Phoebes built under the eve near the front door, this spring, and then the Phoebes decided not to use their nest. This spot is sheltered from all the elements, shaded, and safe from any predators. The tiny, hummingbird nest is carefully positioned, centered and attached on top of the Phoebe's unused nest. It is a small, delicate, intricate work of art--and accounts for all the hummingbird activity that's been by the front door and the dogwood tree this summer :-) Although my hummingbird is no longer actively using this nest, there was concern and buzz bys, when took a closer look and snapped a picture with the cell phone. My girls and juvies are continuing to add ounces, and actively utilizing 17 feeders. Red flags are flying in the east side of the habitat for migrating hummers to notice, stop, rest, and find needed food.
