Monarch butterflies still nectaring on swamp milkweed. From late August to present. I read one female can lay 700 eggs. And they surely did lay many on our milkweed. My middle schoolers find caterpillars everyday we go to observe the action on the milkweed. We need to collect milkweed to feed the captive ones we are rearing inside. However, I am concerned that some rooms are too cold (a c can not be controlled) and several caterpillars stop growing and die before making a chrysalis. This has happened to 3 of the 25 caterpillars we are raising in 4 10 gallon tanks we have in 4 different classrooms. Today I am moving the tanks from the coldest rooms to my art room where I can keep the temperature above 70^ F. Picture shows 1tank from the top with 3 chrysalis and 2 large caterpillars eating.
