The migration (so far) at Clearville Park is a bust. I have only seen two Monarchs in as many days. Previous years have seen strong migrations south east along Lake Eire north shore. Point Pelee is 50 miles to the south west. In good years before the big declines started in the 1990’s it was not unusual to see "rivers of orange" flowing through Clearville Park (always around the middle of September). This year the Monarch is almost non-existent. I’m checking every day hoping they’ll show up.
I think there are two reasons for this. #1 I did not see a 2nd generation butterfly until August 6 (which is 2 months late) despite spending a lot of my time on high quality conservation lands looking for them. The spread into Ontario was too late to produce a significant population. #2 : This summer has been extremely dry and as a result milkweed has been in very poor condition since early July.
