I just went outside to check and count the number of Monarch butterfly chrysalises we have in our backyard near our milkweed plants growing in a corner of our yard. I was able to count seven this evening. One chrysalis is beginning to turn dark with the Monarch inside. Earlier we found one clear, empty chrysalis where a Monarch had apparently emerged. This is the first year that we have had milkweed of any size to attract egg-laying on the leaves. We now have a 10-foot Common Milkweed where we have spotted many in the larva stage earlier. Believe it or not, this milkweed was started from a tiny seed in a tiny seed pot last spring. It did not attain much growth last year. All of this is SO interesting, and we hope we are helping provide an environment where we can add more Monarchs into the world.
