Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/15/2016

Number: 50

There have been eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults in my yard for the past 6 weeks.

We had two milkweed plants for the past several years. This year, in August, we noticed Monarch larvae devouring the plants [26 larvae]. We bought more milkweed to plant. Then almost overnight, they disappeared. We found one Chrysalis. It emerged. It then laid eggs on our new plants as well as other Monarch adults. This was late August to early September 2016. We had numerous eggs, caterpillars, and pupae [approximately 24 or so]. About 1/3rd have emerged as butterflies. Two caterpillars secured themselves to the fascia board on the house, but they died without going to Pupae. Two pupae have turned black and then started to weep. I know that the first was dead and nothing but juices. I am waiting to check the second one. There are still 12 or so that are in Chrysalis and waiting to emerge.

We have new eggs. We have caterpillars of various sizes from 1/16th inch to almost full grown. I have planted 12 more adult milkweed plants and 30 spouts. I have also planted about 60 seeds with most emerging as new plants.

If anyone knows where I can find some native milkweed within about 30 to 40 miles of Beaumont, Texas that I can dig up, please let me know.
