Exciting sighting! Becky in Nibley, UT, collects monarch caterpillars from her yard and releases them when they become a butterfly.
On September 1 she tagged AN104, a freshly eclosed male monarch, and let him fly.
Last Wednesday, September 14, Eli was taking photos of monarchs at Ouray National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Utah and spotted AN104 - and he was part of a mating pair! AN104 flew approximately 152 miles southeast.
Thank you both, Becky and Eli, for your great work! (Tagging in UT is new this year - keep an eye out for tagged monarchs!)
