Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/22/2016

Number: 6

We still have at least 2 moms and their young at our feeders from this summer. We had a total of approx 4 full families constantly at our 6 feeders thru August. The dads left on their southern migration a bit earlier than usual this year; the moms always seem to 'hang back' and tend to their young until they are ready to fly. This morning they are all 'gorging' on every kind of flower and feeder they can find, to store energy; also doing a lot of 'wing stretches' while perching, as well as 'aerial exercises' - swooping, etc., with each other - as if rehearsing for the 'big fly.'
This is our 20th year of feeding and observing hummingbirds here, and this may have been our most 'active' summer yet - a very good feeling that our family is helping to preserve the habitat and number of these amazing birds.
