Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/20/2016

Number: 8

I visited a farmer wanting to sow a field with milkweed seeds to establish habitat for the monarch. While there I checked a small patch he had in one of his fields. He'd had someone mow around the plants when haying recently. The milkweed was old and I only saw tussock moth caterpillars devouring the plants. Much to my surprise I found 8 LARGE caterpillars - three on one leaf! On a nearby plant there was even a chrysalis! Only the 4th I've ever found in the wild! I witnessed several monarchs flying overhead. They were likely headed to his goldenrod field which was amazing - iron weed and goldenrod - a beautiful combination. A great outing and another monarch lover has entered our fold! :)
