Today is the first day that the migration has been evident in Lawrence. As I drove in today, 9 monarchs passed over or along side the car as I crossed the Corps of Engineer Dam at Clinton Lake just 4 miles SW of the lab. I was also greeted by 10 monarchs feeding at the flowers as I entered the lab. Later in the morning and early afternoon all monarchs disappeared. Perfect! That likely means they caught a thermal and are gliding S/SW toward OK and TX from this location. The skies are clear and there is virtually no wind at ground level and these are the perfect conditions for soaring and gliding. Monarchs should be dropping down to feed at this time of day to be followed by the formation of roosting clusters at the end of the day from KS into N TX.
