Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 09/30/2016

Number: 10

It's 54 degrees here today in North Georgia. The first cool day we have had since winter. The Ruby throated hummingbirds are swooping around like this might be their last day here. The males have already migrated for the warmer south. Except for possibly the immature Ruby- males which their ruby neck feathers have a bit of a five o'clock shadow. At this point they are hard to tell from their mothers. We still have quite a few females. Plus some hummers just stopping by as they journey south.. The sounds of hummingbird chatter is loud this morning. Zipping around even before the daylight emerged. This shot is a female taken just 2 days ago...She is all fluffed up waiting just daring another hummer to trespass on her feeder... We have 10 feeders around the yard, plenty of food for all, but still they stand their ground chasing off in a mad display of furry all others that would dare to sneak a sip of their guarded nectar. Sometimes the masses get the better, and you can see several all feeding at the same time.. Then in a flash as if to say okay that's enough, and the fighting begins a new. I'm thinking it is a bit unusual for the hummers to still be here & in such a mass amount.. Don't know what this tells us...
What I do know is they are such cute little creatures, and I am so happy they are a part of my life each year. : ) Have a fabulous weekend everyone.. get out & enjoy nature.... : ) xo♥
