Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 10/02/2016

Number: 5

we had several of our regular hummingbirds still September 23-25 since beginning of April, at 9 feeders {our regulars went through 3+ quarts of sugar solution per day 9-12 quarts spread around at a time}but we noticed 9/23-9/25 there must have been a lot of migrators territorizing/terrorizing our regulars because the feed wasn't going down as fast Mon-Thurs while we were there, as we left fresh like always, when we returned Fri-Sun not much had been eaten and only 5 birds, so the 5 we have now might be migrators that ran ours off. We spread the feeders as much as possible but some of the migrators? stayed close and ran them off all the feeders last weekend, we even observed them sitting on top of feeders to run them off {& some not used to feeders landing on the top and trying to drill a hole through}--our regulars were so sure of regular feed {never running out} possibly why they usually ate 4-5 on a feeder, very little territory-trouble often just 1 bird and we would keep his a little away from the rest. I hope we get lots of migrators and will leave them out until frost but not 9-12 qts. twice a week again until next April--we have gotten the 9-12qts. put out 2-3 times a week for the past 9 years, also have red salvia, very picky about cleaning feeders, and heating water then adding correct sugar & have totally enjoyed them!
