Our count of 10 to 20 hummers has stayed fairly constant since the beginning of September. The count dropped for a day or two after fronts, the first stalled to the north about 10 days ago and the second on or about September 29. The number of hummingbirds dropped to about 4 or 5. But, they're BACK!
We have not had the number we had 4 years ago when we had over 100 here in mid-September. But, we have more this year in our main hummingbird garden than we have see in the previous 3 years. The garden has Shrimp Plants, Turk's Caps, Red Autumn Sage, Theresa Autumn Sage and a huge Cigar Plant. (When I prefocused a lens on the Cigar Plant, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the attached image was in my view finder!) Also, after loosing their blossoms due to a lot of rain, our Flame Acanthuses are again blooming with hummers finding them today. And finally today, I discovered two patches of black and Blue Salvia's which must have been seeded by birds from a garden on the other side of our barn.
